A separate rear entrance can be lighted with a wall lantern installed over the keyhole. To conserve energy, consider using high-intensity discharge or compact fluorescent light sources like mercury vapor or high pressure sodium.

For safety and security, install a wall fixture on the garage. Fixtures equipped with high-pressure sodium bulbs will provide more light.

Low-level path lights, which spread circular patterns of light, will brighten the walkway, while highlighting nearby flower beds and shrubs. Low level path lights can also be used for long driveways.

In order to prevent unwanted glare from your outdoor lighting, use bulbs with reasonable illumination levels. You may also use full cut-off fixtures to direct the light down towards the ground, where it is needed, rather than being cast to the side or up towards the sky, where it is wasted.

Recessed or track lighting provides general lighting while enabling you to highlight prized possessions throughout a room. A ring of four recessed downlights around the dining table supplements the light from the chandelier, while providing accent light for your tableware. The white light of low-voltage fixtures with tungsten-halogen bulbs will make your silverware and crystal sparkle.

A buffet or sideboard can be flanked with wall sconces on either side. Choose fixtures that complement the style of your chandelier. Tub and shower enclosures can be adequately lit by placing an enclosed damp location recessed downlight in the ceiling. Theses downlights are also recommended over whirlpool baths and saunas.

Dimming controls are ideal for the living room because they allow you to design the lighting to suit each mood and family activity.

Fireplaces of brick or stone can be framed with recessed downlights installed in the ceiling over the mantle. Wall sconces on each side of the fireplace are an attractive addition that draw attention to the fireplace, while providing general lighting for the room.

TV and video games require low level lighting that does not wash out the screen’s image.

Glass shelves and glassware can be accented by recessed fixtures.

Miniature track lights can be installed under shelves to provide the room with accent and general lighting.

The use of low-voltage fixtures with tungsten-halogen bulbs will emit a bright, white light that will make glassware sparkle, while providing light for serving.

Reading requires task lighting from behind the reader’s shoulder. The bottom of the shade should be at eye level.

Undercabinet lighting is ideal for countertops. Mount as close to the front of the cabinets as possible to avoid glare reflecting off work surfaces.

Challenge: You don’t have enough light to read in the bath tub.

Solution: In order to be fully functional, lighting in the shower stall or over the tub should be bright enough for cleaning, shaving and reading shampoo labels. If you have an older home that was constructed before UL-rated bulbs were available, add some recessed down lights designed for use in wet areas, and put shields around them. Shielded fixtures will protect reclining bathers’ eyes from glare. An adjustable accent light aimed from outside the tub is dramatic, glare-free and great for those who bring books to the bath.

Challenge: You are often frustrated by uneven shadows or glare, and feel that lighting is inadequate when you look in the mirror.

Solution: Upgrade your lighting by investing in xenon, halogen or fluorescent technology. Each of these has a higher lumen output than standard incandescent fixtures. If you have a single ceiling-mounted fixture over the vanity or a light bar over the mirror and don’t want to cut new holes for electrical connections, you can mount a track over the existing electrical outlet and hang a decorative fixture over the sink and pendants from either side of the mirror.

Challenge: You don’t want others to be rudely awakened when someone in the household has to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Solution: Install a dimmer to control the lighting level. Basic dimmer controls are simple to install in any existing or new setting.
